The Weekender to close today

Published: 2009/11/06 03:12:52 PM

The Weekender, Business Day's sister newspaper, will publish its last edition tomorrow.

Media companies have been hard hit by the recession and BDFM, which is 50% owned by media and entertainment group Avusa , is no exception.

Mzi Malunga, the managing director of BDFM, said the decision was not an easy one to take. “The worst thing that ever happens, for anyone who works in media, is the closure of a newspaper. Because it feels like part of you is dead,” he said.

Peter Bruce, editor in chief of Business Day and The Weekender, was saddened by the decision. “It was a great paper. We will all learn lessons from this, about journalism and about trust,” he said.

Founded in 2006, the paper was intended to fill a gap in the market for an upmarket, quality read on Saturday.

This is devastating news. Why is it that a decent product such as this gets the plug pulled on it while there are so many mediocre print offerings defiling the marketplace? Other so-called quality papers have been dumbing down their content (or making it terminally boring) but The Weekender has consistently featured excellent writing and thought-provoking analysis. Surely there is space in the market for a high-quality niche product such as The Weekender. Perhaps with a little more of a push, it would have succeeded. Oh well, another oasis of good journalism bites the dust. So long - it was fun while it lasted. Kudos to Rehana and Katy for their unfailing passion and belief in this little gem.
