THE Pietermaritzburg High Court granted an interdict yesterday forbidding members of the Togetherness Amalgamated Workers Union of SA (Tawusa) from intimidating workers seeking jobs as drivers with Durban’s new bus operator, Transnat Africa.
This has paved the way for the interrupted bus service to resume operations this week.
Mike Jesserman, CE of Transnat Africa, said a partial service should have resumed yesterday, but intimidation prevented the company from employing the required 100 drivers.
Transnat Africa will need 500 drivers to operate its full service and has undertaken to employ these from among the 800 Remant Alton drivers who lost their jobs when the company terminated its contract last month .
However, Tawusa wants all 800 drivers signed up. It maintains they are being re-employed, as the eThekwini Transport Authority owns the buses, so the workers should be offered a continuous service contract.
Jesserman insists he is offering a new contract with fresh conditions of service. Margie Inggs
