Somali pirates captured a Singapore-flagged and owned container ship on Thursday, a maritime official said, and an associate of the pirates confirmed the report.

Andrew Mwangura of the Kenya-based East African Seafarers’ Assistance Programme said the MV Kota Wajar was seized 300 nautical miles north of Seychelles on Thursday morning.

Details on the nationalities of the ship’s crew were not immediately available, Mwangura said.

Somali pirate gangs have made millions of dollars in ransom payments since last year and patrols by foreign navies in the Gulf of Aden has failed to end the problem.
