FNB has informed its clients that with effect from December, its cards will no longer swipe at toll gates as one of the measures to enhance security ahead of the busy festive season where people travel a lot.
The bank, which has more than 11 million clients, on Tuesday informed its client base it had implemented measures to safeguard their funds, saying contactless taps were a safer option.
“We would like to inform you of an important change to the toll gate payment system across SA, effective December 1. As part of efforts to enhance security and streamline payment processes, South African toll gates will begin migrating from traditional magstripe (swipe) payments to contactless tap functionality,” the lender said in a communication to its clients.
“Areas impacted from December 1 are the N3 toll route from Joburg to Durban, the N4 toll route from Pretoria to Komatipoort, as well as Chapman’s Peak and surrounding areas,”
“FNB Fleet, garage and business petrol magstripe cards can still be used until June 30 2025. Foreign cards will now also be accepted at SA tollgates.”
Some of the routes that will not be immediately impacted by FNB’s discontinuation of magstripe payments at toll gates include the Bakwena N1 N4 toll route.
Sanral and various toll concessionaires will continue accepting magstripe payments only until May 31 2025.
