Two employees of the diversified metals group South32 have died at Mozal aluminium smelter in Mozambique.
Cristovão Alberto Tonela and Alfredo Francisco Domingos João were fatally injured on Monday, the company said in a statement on Tuesday.
“A contractor was also seriously injured in the same incident and is receiving treatment,” it said. “We are providing support and counselling to help them through this difficult time, as well as supporting our injured colleague and the Mozal team.”
Reduction operations in Potroom A at Mozal, 20km west of the capital Maputo, have been suspended while an investigation is under way.
According to its 2022 annual report, Mozal was responsible for 4.43% of total aluminium and alumina production. South32 is valued at R212.95bn on the JSE.
