An employee of Harmony Gold died in a mining accident last Thursday following a seismic event at Kusasalethu mine, near Carletonville in Gauteng, the company said in a brief statement on Monday.
That led to the employee dying in a so-called fall-of-ground incident, the gold miner, valued at R35.87bn on the JSE, said.
A fall-of-ground incident refers to collapse or failure of a portion of a mine’s roof, walls or floor.
“We are deeply saddened by this loss. We extend our condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of the deceased,” CEO Peter Steenkamp said.
According to data by the Minerals Council SA, a trade association representing the mining and minerals industry, fall-of-ground incidents have been declining along with other mining fatalities as safety improves.
However, it convened a special board meeting in September to address the “unacceptable regression” in the mining industry’s safety performance in August after eight deaths during that month.
