Former Telkom CEO Sipho Maseko has taken up a board position with retail giant Shoprite, where he will be joined by Hlengani Mathebula, the erstwhile chairperson of the Eskom Pension and Provident Fund.
Maseko, who is part of a consortium seeking to take control of Telkom in an audacious multibillion-rand bid, becomes an independent non-executive director the SA’s biggest grocer with immediate effect.
The high-powered Shoprite board, chaired by former Absa boss Wendy Lucas-Bull, also counts retail mogul Christo Wiese and accounting expert Nonkululeko Gobodo among its members.
“The board welcomes Hlengani and Sipho and looks forward to their valued contribution to the group," the group said in a statement.
Since stepping down from the helm at Telkom in December 2021, Maseko has kept a low profile until emerging in the bid for control of his former employer.
Business Day has in a series of articles reported about Maseko and Mauritius-based Axian Telecom amassing a war chest of about R12bn to wrest power and inject much-needed cash into the ailing state-run telecom operator.
Telkom has so far resisted the consortium’s overtures.
