David Kan, the founder and CEO of ICT group Mustek, has died, the company announced on Friday.
Kan founded the company in 1987 and was a highly respected icon and legendary figure in the IT industry, building the company into one of the largest assembler and distributors of personal computers in SA after emigrating from Taiwan.
“He leaves behind a proud legacy of strong and principled leadership, and he will be sorely missed by his fellow directors, the management and all employees at Mustek,” the group said in a statement.
Mustek, valued at R964m, saw its shares slip almost 5% on Friday, but it has more than doubled over the past two years as the company has benefited from the work-from-home trend.
The group said recently it expected to continue to benefit from that, despite easing Covid-19 restrictions, while investments in new product lines such as networking equipment and fibre had also started paying off.
“Employees had a glimpse of what their workplaces can be, and most will demand this type of flexibility from their employers in future,” it has said.
