MTN boss Ralph Mupita has been appointed deputy chair of international telecoms body, the GSM Association (GSMA).
The GSMA is a nonprofit trade organisation that represents the interests of more than 1,000 mobile network operators worldwide, unifying the broader mobile ecosystem to advocate for industry policies, push innovation and facilitate key industry events like Mobile World Congress.
The association plays a key role in shaping the development of mobile communications, including through its administration of technical standards and it push to expand digital inclusion globally.
On Thursday, the GSMA’s board elected Mupita as deputy chair for the remainder of the board term, at the end of 2026.
“In this role, he will support the chair and board in overseeing the strategic direction of the organisation, which represents the world’s mobile operators and companies in the broader mobile ecosystem,” said the association.
Mupita is highly rated as an executive and business leader, having been named CEO of the year by the Africa CEO Forum.
He took the helm at MTN in September 2020, having previously served as the group’s CFO. In November, MTN announced Mupita’s term as CEO — running to September 2025 — had been extended to end of August 2030.
“This appointment is a great honour as it comes at a time of rapid developments in technology and increasing digital adoption across Africa,” Mupita said.
