The SA economy, including the financial markets, will withstand volatility coming out of the ANC's internal political contestation, finance minister Enoch Godongwana said on Saturday.
Speaking at a business briefing alongside the ANC national elective conference in Johannesburg, Godongwana said the leadership contest would not result in policy shocks, whoever won.
“It's our nature, we seem quite chaotic,” he said tongue in cheek. “So irrespective of the change in government to party, will continue to pursue his policies.”
He said only Nelson Mandela was spared from being “recalled” by the ANC, and political volatility had become part of the parcel of the ANC.
The party is expected to elect new leaders in the next few days and there are fears that Ramaphosa's reform agenda will be derailed if he loses the party president contest to his former health minister Zweli Mkhize.
“I'm not panicking about the candidate. I've worked with all of the individuals that we've worked... Each of those people has got a good grasp of the challenges of this economy.”
“Those of you know the president, now is quite committed. Those of you know, even during his time as treasurer-general, [Mkhize] was very active in co-ordinating businesses.”
