I Know This Much is True — Showmax

Based on the novel by Wally Lamb, this gritty, grim and dramatically satisfying miniseries tells a compellingly bleak story of brothers and the bonds that bind them. Starring Mark Ruffalo in a breathtaking performance as twin brothers, troubled Dominick and much more troubled schizophrenic Thomas, it’s a moving and thoughtful examination of tough lives lived under tough circumstances and the small rays of hope that occasionally manage to shine through. New episodes added weekly.

Das Boot — Showmax

Not so much a series reboot of Wolfgang Petersen’s classic 1981 submarine film, but rather an expansion of the story that still tells it from the perspective of the Germans during World War 2. Still using the same source material — the novel by Lothar G Buchheim — this international co-production branches out into the lives of characters beyond the confines of the sub and includes a greater number of female characters front and centre in its narrative. It’s thrilling political and espionage drama told firmly within the world of the past but always with the broader issues of the present in its peripheral vision.

Britannia Season 2 — Showmax

David Morrissey and the Romans continue their brutal battle with the stubborn Brits in this historical drama of the conquest of Britain in AD43. Don’t rely on it for historical accuracy; rather just enjoy its mad mix of magic, double crosses and operatic violence.

Home Game — Netflix

Superbly shot and dramatically engaging, this eight-part off-the-beaten track sports docuseries looks at the world of traditional sports around the world and the people who devote their lives to them. From the hard, muscled, bare-knuckle boxing proponents of the 500-year-old insanity that is the Florentine game of Calcio Storico — think rugby on meth and steroids — to the loyal caber tossers of the Highland Games, Indian traditional wrestlers and Roller Derby nutters.

Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga — Netflix

Another silly piece of pop culture parody from Will Ferrell that is strictly for fans of the American comedian’s particular brand of over-the-top ridiculousness. This time Ferrell finds himself donning many high-camp costumes in his role as aspirant musician Lars who, together with musical soul mate Sigrit (Rachel McAdams), makes a play for the greatest non-accolade in European music.
