THE SOUVENIR II – NETFLIX

Honor Swinton Byrne and Tilda Swinton return to collaborate with director Joanna Hogg for the second instalment in her acclaimed semi-autobiographical drama. This time around, Julie (Byrne) must pick herself up after the end of her turbulent relationship with an older man — which formed the focus of the first film — to work through her difficult emotions and turn them into the material for her graduation film. As she embarks on a journey to discover her creative voice, Julie tries to separate the facts of her relationship from the lies, and reconcile that the things she thought she knew about her former lover prove to have been half-truths and falsifications. The results are cinematically inventive, emotionally provocative and unique, and prove Hogg to be one of modern British movies’ most exciting and talented voices.

HUMANIST VAMPIRE SEEKING CONSENTING SUICIDAL PERSON – MUBI.COM

French director Ariane Louis-Seize’s Gen Z vampire comedy may offer less singular bite than its title promises but it’s still an intriguing take on the genre. Sara Montpetit stars as teenage vampire Sasha, whose immortal bloodsucking life would be going swimmingly were she not too sensitive to kill to ensure a regular blood supply. When her vampire parents cut off her blood allowance, she’s forced to fend for herself and befriends a suicidal teen named Paul, who is more than willing to give up his life to save hers. As their friendship develops, it turns out that their agreement may not be as easy to transact as they thought, and the film becomes less a gothic tale than an awkward Gen Z teen love story.

VENCER O MORIR – PRIME VIDEO

The true story of ordinary Chileans forced by the murderous realities of the Pinochet regime to dedicate themselves to armed struggle forms the basis of this compelling period drama series. When Cecilia, a university professor, witnesses two of her students being kidnapped by Pinochet’s CNI police, she tries to help them. The desperation of their families and the depressing realities of her attempts to assist lead her to join the communist Manuel Rodriguez Patriotic Front and lead a new, dangerous life underground in pursuit of justice and an end to the tyranny of Pinochet.

YOU WOULD DO IT TOO – APPLE TV+

Apple TV+ joins the Spanish thriller series trend with this twisty drama in which an armed robbery takes place on a bus travelling from the Barcelona airport. When one of the passengers intervenes the results are three dead robbers; six witnesses, who either can’t or refuse to identify their vigilante saviour; and one mysterious man on the run from the police.

HYSTERIA – SHOWMAX

The “Satanic Panic” of the 1980s proves useful fodder for this comedy-thriller series. The outcast members of a high school metal band use the mysterious disappearance of the popular quarterback, and its rumoured links to satanic forces, to rebrand themselves. It all seems to be going according to plan until a series of kidnappings and murders and “occult activity” lead the community on a witch hunt that points to the band as the main suspects.
