Robert De Niro makes his television series debut in this political conspiracy thriller in which he plays a beloved former president who is called on to help restore order to America after a devastating cyberattack. As he begins to investigate what happened and who might be responsible, his personal demons begin to surface and force him to ask tough questions about how far he’s willing to go for the greater good. Co-starring Jesse Plemons, Lizzy Caplan, Joan Allen, Matthew Modine and Angela Bassett, it plays on current fears about technology and greed.

Italian artist Pino Pascali was at the peak of his creative powers when he was killed in an accident in 1968. More than 50 years later, the museum in his birth town of Apulia decided to buy and exhibit one of his works. Director Walter Fasano went along with his camera to see what the return of the artwork to its “origins” might say about Pascali and his reputation as a revolutionary creator, so many years after his death and the tumultuous moment in which it occurred.

This German language series takes international viewers into the slightly different world of Berlin’s hospital madness. Morgane Ferru plays medic Dr Parker, newly arrived in Berlin from Munich, looking to restart after a personal crisis. She thinks that the environs of the city’s busiest hospital will be the right place to start her new life journey, but things turn out to be more challenging than she could have imagined.

Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight delves into the gritty world of 19th-century London’s notoriously tough East End for this tough dramatic tale of gangsters, illegal boxing and immigrant aspiration. Starring Malachi Kirby, Stephen Graham and Erin Doherty, the show tells the story of two best friends newly arrived in the East End from Jamaica, looking to make a new life for themselves, only to find that they’ve caught the attention of a local gang lord and underground boxing champion who sees them as a threat to his underworld empire.

Swedish director Magnus Von Horn is nominated for best international feature Oscar this year for his dark gothic drama The Girl with the Needle. This debut feature from 2015 is an early demonstration of his ability to delve into uncomfortable psychological territory, exploring the journey of a Swedish teen who returns to his hometown after serving time in prison. He finds that while the state feels he has done his time and deserves forgiveness, the people most affected by it are not ready to forgive or forget.
