Gone Girls: The Long Island Serial Killer — Netflix

Director Liz Garbus follows up her 2020 dramatic feature Lost Girls with this documentary series about the true story and long fight for justice for the victims of the Long Island serial killer.

In 2010 the bodies of four women were found on a lonely stretch of the highway near Gilgo Beach. Their families have waited more than a decade as authorities dragged their feet in solving the crimes because the victims were sex workers. Echoing similar police prejudices in cases like the Yorkshire Ripper killings in England in the 1970s, the authorities in present-era Long Island have been found wanting in their approach to the investigation and, as Garbus’ series shows, the victims of this prejudice have been not only the women killed but their long-suffering and justifiably angry family members.

Dying for Sex — Disney Plus

Michelle Williams stars in this bittersweet adaptation of the podcast by Nikki Boyer as Molly Kochan, a young woman who makes the life-changing decision to leave her husband of 15 years after she’s diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer. She uses what time she has left to explore all the unfulfilled and previously unthinkable aspects of her sexuality. She’s not alone, though, as her trusty best friend, Nikki (Jenny Slate), is there to hold her hand, laugh, cry and wonder at the freedom that can come from taking the leap and living life to the fullest.

Babes — Rent or buy from Apple TV+

Broad City’s Ilana Glazer and Better Things’ Pamela Adlon team up for this breezy, smart exploration of the complexities of motherhood and pregnancy. Glazer writes and stars under Adlon’s assuredly paced direction as Eden, who has no plans to become a mother, though she’s happy to support her best friend, Dawn (Michelle Buteau), in achieving her dreams of motherhood. Fate and a steamy one-night stand have other plans in mind, and soon the roles are reversed, with Eden facing the rollercoaster of pregnancy while Dawn offers moral support and reality checks as the due date looms.

Bosch: Legacy Season Three — Prime Video

Titus Welliver and the rest of the cast of the dark LA noir adaptation of Michael Connelly’s best-selling crime novels say their goodbyes. It’s a final season that, as always, throws former detective turned PI Harry Bosch into a murky mess of underworld danger, personal crises and twisty plotted conspiracy that may just prove to be his toughest case yet.

Ludwig — BBC Brit and DStv Catch Up

A light, charming and perfectly pitched comedy crime vehicle for the particular bristly, awkward talents of David Mitchell. Mitchell stars as hermit oddball and professional puzzle setter John “Ludwig” Taylor, who, after his identical brother, police detective James Taylor goes missing, finds himself in the uncomfortable position of having to pretend to be him to find out what’s happened to him.
