Sara: Woman in the Shadows — Netflix

The murky Naples underworld serves as a fitting backdrop to this Italian murder mystery series adapted from the novels by Maurizio De Giovanni. When a young man dies after being run over by a car, his mother is convinced there’s something strange behind his death. She may have reason to believe this because she’s no ordinary woman but a former member of a secret service unit. Though she thought she was free of her past, she is drawn back in as she methodically pieces together the truth of what happened to her son.

The Survivors — Netflix

Past secrets and traumas also form the thematic background for this Australian drama based on the novel by Jane Harper.

Returning after 15 years to his home, the coastal town of Evelyn Bay, a young man and his former friends are forced to confront a tragic incident from their past after a murder rocks the town’s tightknit community. As the search for answers to the present-day tragedy unfolds, the truths that were hidden in the past gradually come to light and place all of those who survived them under pressure and suspicion.

Sinners — Rent or buy Apple TV+

Freed from the Marvel franchise successes of their Black Panther films, director Ryan Coogler and star Michael B Jordan reteam for the year’s boldest and most impressive mainstream genre bender.

Jordan plays twins in a story set in the segregationist, Delta blues-infused South that mashes together elements of vampire horror and Southern gothic to admirably inventive new effect. It is a celebration of black creativity and expression, and the varied immigrant experiences that have always been part of the tapestry of American life.

Stick — Apple TV+

Owen Wilson’s feel-good, stoner-style charms prove enough to anchor this slight, sometimes sickly sweet but entertaining dramedy about a past-his-prime, bumbling former golf-pro who grabs one last chance for success as the coach of a talented young golfer, who he believes has what it takes to go all the way.

Ocean with David Attenborough — Disney Plus

To coincide with World Ocean Day on Sunday June 8, National Geographic and the world’s favourite 99-year-old naturalist and eco-conservation hero Sir David Attenborough take a deep dive through the natural wonders of “the world’s final frontier”, and make a startling discovery that may enable us to save the oceans and even preserve the future of the planet.
