Five things to watch this week

Guinness heirs, dark thriller, road trip, takkie wars and misfit spy wrangler

House of Guinness — Netflix

Peaky Blinders’ creator, Steven Knight, turns his imaginative attention to 19th century Dublin for this thrilling Succession-style drama. It is based on the true story of the chaos that erupted between the heirs to the Guinness brewery fortune after the death of mogul Benjamin Guinness in 1868. James Norton, Anthony Boyle, Louis Partridge and Emily Fairn star in a show that early reviewers are celebrating what could be Knight’s best yet for its sexy blend of high entertainment, tense family period drama set to an anachronistic modern rock soundtrack.

Wayward — Netflix

Canadian comedian Mae Martin creates and stars in this dark thriller drama series about the creepy residents of the fictional town Tall Pines and its academy for wayward teens, which is under the leadership of Toni Collette’s disturbing cult head. As the eight episodes of this engaging, twisty, easily bingeable tale unfold, we learn that everything is not what it seems and Collette’s seemingly kooky but well-meaning hippy do-gooder Evelyn Wade is far more dangerous and unhinged than she’s led her prospective clients to believe.

Sacramento — Rent or buy Apple TV+

Michael Angarano directs and stars alongside Michael Cera and Kristen Stewart in this quietly perceptive and slyly funny tale of friendship and reconnection. After the death of his father, free-spirited and energetic Rickey (Angarano) convinces his long-suffering friend Glenn (Cera) to take a therapeutic road trip with him from Los Angeles to Sacramento. Reluctantly, and with a little push from his pregnant wife Rosie (Stewart), Glenn agrees and soon the two old friends find themselves taking a journey that will test the limits of their friendship and force them to confront long-held anxieties and uncertainties.

Sneaker Wars: Adidas vs Puma — Disney Plus

The fabled business legend of the rivalry between German brothers Adi and Rudi Dassler and the rival sports brand giants of Adidas and Puma that they created is told in this docuseries with help from sporting legends including David Beckham and Usain Bolt. The fierce sibling competition that began in their home in Germany in the 1920s carried over into their business lives and helped to shape the modern sportswear industry throughout their lives and long after their deaths.

Slow Horses Season 5 — Apple TV+

Gary Oldman’s flatulent, bath-averse, chain-smoking, whisky-guzzling misfit spy wrangler Jackson Lamb and his lovable band of dysfunctional blights to the British security establishment are back for another high-drama, entertaining and darkly funny adventure in this fifth instalment of the series of adaptations of the novels by Mick Herron. This time it’s a tragic shooting and the suspicious existence of a love life for Slough House’s resident doofus Roddy Ho that will converge to thrust the Slow Horses to the centre of a time-ticking conspiracy that threatens their future and that of the unwitting nation at large.
