Mercedes-Benz SA has announced the start of sales of the new Mercedes-AMG G 63 Grand Edition, which is limited to 1,000 units globally. Only 20 examples of the model painted in Manufaktur night black magno with Kalaharigold gold-coloured details have been allocated for SA, and the company says most are spoken for.

The special decorative elements trace the direct lineage of the modern car to the first G model from 1979, according to Mercedes-AMG. The stylistic touches include the AMG logo, Mercedes-Benz star and the Affalterbach emblem emblazoned on the bonnet, all in Kalaharigold magno.

The inlays in the front and rear bumpers, the underside protection in the front and the Mercedes star in the spare wheel inlay are also finished in this colour, and it rides on 22-inch AMG forged wheels in tech gold with a matt black central locking nut.

The colour tone is extended to a customised AMG indoor car cover that protects the vehicle from dust and scratches in the garage.

The black and gold theme continues inside as “AMG” emblems on the black door sill trims with illuminated borders, seats finished in G Manufaktur black nappa leather with contrasting gold stitching, plaques with a gold AMG logo and edging set into the backrests. The floor mats are also finished in black and decorated with gold stitching.

Luxury touches include roof grab handles finished in nappa leather and the trim piece in the inlay of the passenger side grab handle in carbon, which is embossed with “Grand Edition.” The AMG Performance steering wheel in Dinamica microfibre features a steering wheel clasp with a G 63 plaque.

The vehicle is powered by the standard G63’s 4.0l biturbo V8 engine with outputs of 430kW and 850Nm.

“The G Class is the godfather of the SUV. A handcrafted luxury off-roader that has stood the test of time and will continue to do so. This latest edition is beyond special with only 20 in SA. It commemorates the legendary status of the G Class and confirms its iconic status on and off the road,” said Mark Raine who concludes his stint as co-CEO Mercedes-Benz SA in August.

The Mercedes-AMG G 63 Grand Edition is priced at R5,474,512.
