Toyota SA has announced a new Toyota Fortuner GR-S model. The new range-topper of the best selling SUV will be launched during the first quarter of 2025.

Gazoo Racing is Toyota’s sporting subsidiary, and the sport-inspired features and aesthetics on the Fortuner include an aggressive bumper design, black alloys and performance-focused upgrades. The company doesn’t share much detail on the technical bits, and says all will be revealed at launch.

We can expect the new Fortuner GR-S to follow in the wide footsteps of the Hilux GR-S III inspired by the company's Dakar Rally competitor launched here in May 2024, featuring wide chunky BF Goodrich 265/65 R17 tyres, flared fenders and enlarged disc brakes front and back, and a wide spectrum of sporty cabin touches and added amenities.

The local introduction of the Fortuner GR-S is also set to coincide with the ninth edition of the Fortuner Challenge — a contest that sees four participants representing four media partners (including Arena) paired with a local sporting hero to participate in a series of 4x4 obstacles, speed and endurance tests as well as brainteasers.

The local stars who will take part in the 2025 Fortuner Challenge are former Kaizer Chiefs soccer team star Willard Katsande; Equestrian show jumping star Nicole Horwood; Toyota Cheetahs rugby team member and captain Victor Sekekete and Toyota Gazoo Racing team's Saood Variawa.

Celebrity hosts who will keep the audience entertained throughout the event ae Nicholas Goliath and rugby player Oupa Mohojé. The winning member of the public is expected to walkaway with the new Toyota Fortuner GR-S as a prize.

The event is preceded by the “Back your Hero” campaign where the public can win prizes from the Fortuner Challenge partners — including Quartz Engine Oil, Garmin, Salomon and Thule.

Interested parties can enter the 2025 instalment of the Fortuner Challenge on: Toyota Fortuner Challenge. Entries close on January 24.
