French brand Renault has used a documentary to unveil the production model of the Renault 5 Turbo 3E. The concept car was first revealed in front of our eyes when we attended the 2022 Paris Auto show.
The documentary, “Anatomy of a Comeback,” shot over two years in 4 x 40-minute episodes, tells the story of how the company turned itself around to overcome a crisis, and is available on Prime Video from December 13.
In an insert, the CEO of Renault Group, Luca de Meo, and Renault CEO Fabrice Cambolive visit the company’s design department to see the future Renault 5 Turbo 3E.
The CEO proceeds to share exclusive details of the car that isn’t a radical departure from the wild-looking concept car from 2022. It’s powered by two electric motors housed in the rear wheels will provide a total 372kW and a 0-100km/h sprint in 3.5 seconds.
The first Renault 5 Turbo model was launched forty-four years ago to go rallying. It was wider and more menacing than the humble Renault 5 super mini it was based on. Whereas the donor car had a front-mounted engine, the Frankenstein, whose bodywork was designed by famed Italian coachbuilder, Bertone, had a mid-mounted unit located behind the driver instead.

The 1980 Renault 5 Turbo inspired the modern Clio V6 built between 2001-2005, and the new Turbo 3E which takes the genre to new heights by being a full-electric track and road weapon built using a lightweight carbon monocoque structure. “It’s something only for the brave,” said de Meo.
