BYD launches Sealion SUVs and a potent Shark bakkie in SA

The range comprises electric and plug-in-hybrid drivetrains, and coupe and regular shape SUVs

Chinese car brand BYD (Build Your Dreams) this week launched three new models in SA: the BYD Shark 6 double cab bakkie, Sealion 6 SUV, and the Sealion 7 coupe-SUV. BYD now offers six battery electric and plug-in-hybrid (PHEV) models locally including the BYD Atto 3 launched in 2023 and the Dolphin and Seal sedan that debuted in 2024. 

BYD Shark 6

With a 5,457mm length, the new BYD Shark 6 double cab bakkie has premium features and off-road driving ability, with a 230mm ground clearance, 31/19.3 degree approach/departure angles and 700mm wading depth.

The bold new bakkie is powered by a plug-in-hybrid drivetrain comprising a 1.5l turbocharged engine paired with two electric motors. Total system output is 321kW and 650Nm, with a claimed fuel consumption average of 9.6l/100km and a driving range of 670km. It’s rated to drive 85km on electricity alone.

The new age workhorse with a 2,710kg kerb weight and space for five passengers can accelerate from 0-100km/h in 5.7 seconds, according to its maker. Luxuries include a 10.25-inch touchscreen, heated and ventilated seats, a 12-speaker sound system, adaptive cruise control, a two bar and 13-pin trailer power interface and more.

BYD Sealion 6

The BYD Sealion 6 is a family plug-in-hybrid SUV sold in three trims of Comfort, Dynamic and Premium, and in front and all-wheel-drive guises. Power outputs are 238kW and 550Nm, with 5.5I/100km claimed fuel consumption and 1,080km range in the front-wheel drive models. The all-wheel drive is rated with 870km of driving range on a full tank.

Features in the Sealion 6 include a 15.6-inch infotainment touchscreen, smart voice control, head-up display, adaptive cruise control, card key access, keyless entry and start, heated and ventilated front seats, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a panoramic sunroof with retractable shade depending on chosen trim.

BYD Sealion 7

The BYD Sealion 7 is the more expressive, performance SUV coupe, and is available in two battery-electric vehicle models with rear or all-wheel drive. The performance edition with 390kW and 690Nm on tap accelerates from 0-100km/h in 4.5 seconds, while the Premium edition scoots off in 6.7 seconds. Top speed is 215km/h for both versions.

Frequency selective dampers enhance handling, while the 82.56kWh battery that can be charged from 20%-80% in 30 minutes yields 482km of driving range. The coupe model has a rakish roofline and a 500l boot capacity, with a 58l frunk. A 15.6-inch touchscreen, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay 12-speaker Dynaudio system form part of the amenities.

All new BYD models are sold with a full suite of safety systems, and eight-year/150,000km battery warranties. The plug-in-hybrids come standard with a five-year/100,000km maintenance plan and 20,000km/one-year service intervals.
