New-vehicle sales in SA hit a six-year high in July, registering 51,383 units — the highest monthly sales since October 2019.

Motor industry body Naamsa said improving consumer confidence, favourable credit conditions and a recovery in disposable incomes were driving the market recovery in what was the 10th straight month of increased sales. Year-to-date sales of 330,274 new vehicles this year were 13.9% up on the first seven months of 2024.

Toyota remained the country’s most popular brand with a 24.7% market share, led by a record performance by its Hilux one-tonne bakkie, which shifted 3,120 units in July. Toyota’s Corolla Cross was the second-best-selling passenger car behind the Volkswagen Polo Vivo.

The influence of Chinese vehicle brands continued to grow, with six Chinese cars among the top 30 best-selling passenger car models in July, including newer entrants such as Omoda/Jaecoo and Jetour. Five of the top 20 best-selling light commercials were Chinese.
