Jaecoo, the subsidiary of Chinese Chery automobiles, will soon introduce its new J5 crossover in SA.

Measuring 4,380mm in length, it is smaller than the Jaecoo J7 introduced in June and is expected to be priced lower. The 2,620mm wheelbase and 480l boot are generous capacities for families.

Just like its larger J7 cousin, the new rival to cars such as the VW T-Cross, Toyota Corolla Cross, Kia Seltos and Jetour Dashing, will debut three trims — Vortex, Glacier and Inferno — all powered by a turbocharged 1.5l petrol engine developing 115kW and 230Nm. Power is sent to the front wheels exclusively.

The company says the J5 blends practicality with plush touches, including digital displays, wireless connectivity and other comfort features. Safety features are comprehensive across the range with an advanced suite of driver assistance systems.

The J5 line-up is set to debut locally next month, with pricing and further details to be announced closer to the official reveal.

Jaecoo and sister brand Omoda celebrated a record sales month in July since arriving in SA, with 1,069 units — 60 more than the previous month.

The C5 was the top seller with 813 units, with 170 Jaecoo J7s finding new homes. The flagship Omoda C9 line up accounted for 86 sales, and both models welcomed new plug-in hybrid derivatives with enhanced performance and driving ranges.

“July’s results are a clear indication of the trust SA consumers are placing in the Omoda and Jaecoo brands,” said Hans Greyling, GM for both brands in SA.

“Our continued growth shows that the market is responding not just to our design and technology, but also to the breadth of choice we’re bringing to the market.”

The Chery group will further expand its offerings with sales of the new Lepas and iCaur brands set to begin in 2026.
