The JSE was firmer on Tuesday morning while global peers were mixed as investors shifted their focus to the US Federal Reserve, whose Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) is scheduled to publish its minutes on Wednesday.
Markets are looking for clarity from the FOMC about the Fed’s emergency stimulus measures and where policymakers stand on tapering them.
At its last meeting, the Fed surprised markets with its hawkish stance, signalling two rate hikes in 2023 and also raising its inflation forecast for 2021 by one percentage point from the FOMC meeting in March.
At 10.15am, the JSE all share had gained 0.18% to 66,287.18 points and the top 40 was up 0.19%. Resources had gained 0.69%, banks 0.31% and financials 0.13%. Industrials had lost 0.18%.
The FTSE 100 was flat, while Germany’s DAX had lost 0.36% and France’s CAC 40 was down 0.45%.
Earlier, the Shanghai Composite lost 0.11% and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng shed 0.28%, while Japan’s Nikkei 225 gained 0.16%.
At 10.06am, the rand was little changed at R14.2344/$, and R16.8931/€, while it had weakened 0.13% to R19.7443/£. The euro was flat at $1.1869.
Gold gained 0.84% to $1,806.69/oz and platinum 0.92% to $1,111.71/oz. Brent crude added 0.67% to $77.60 a barrel.
