Cabinet has given the green light for the draft green transport strategy to be published for public comment. The strategy will form the basis for policies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Communications Minister Ayanda Dlodlo said at a post-Cabinet media briefing on Thursday that the strategy was aimed at minimising the adverse impact of transport on the environment "while addressing current and future transport demands based on sustainable development principles".

Emissions from the transport sector account for 10.8% of the country’s total greenhouse gas emissions, with road transport being responsible for 91.2% of this amount.

SA has made an international commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 34% by 2020 and 42% by 2025.
