Strategic Fuel Fund (SFF) chair Nelisiwe Magubane has died at 56, the department of mineral resources & energy said in a statement on Monday, without giving further details.

She was later appointed as deputy director-general responsible for the development of policies that governed electricity, nuclear and clean energy in SA. She served as director-general of the department from 2009 to 2014.
In 2018, Magubane was appointed as a nonexecutive director at Eskom. She was also an executive chair of Matleng Energy Solutions and served as a non-executive director at various energy companies in SA.
“Ms Magubane has served SA with utmost dedication and excellence in the various roles she occupied in the public service,” the department said in a statement.
At the time of her passing, Magubane the chair of the SFF, which is responsible for the management of SA’s strategic crude oil stockpile.
The SFF became the subject of controversy in 2015 when 10-million barrels of crude reserves were irregularly sold off at below-market prices.
