Load-shedding has claimed its latest victim: the 2023 Cape Town International Jazz Festival (CTIJF).
The organisers said in a statement on Friday the event, which was scheduled to take place on March 17-18 2023, would now be moved to 2024 due to several reasons, including “uncertainties around the future of load-shedding”.
“espAfrika unreservedly apologises to all those affected: artists, fans, ticket holders, suppliers, and partners. It was not an easy decision to make, but it is the right one,” CTIJF organisers espAfrika said.
There have been record levels of power cuts in SA in 2022 since load-shedding first started in 2008 as problems persist at state-owned power utility Eskom.
According to recent calculations by the SA Reserve Bank, load-shedding shaved 2.3 percentage points off SA’s real GDP growth in the third quarter when adjusted for non-conventional working hours, weekends and public holidays.
The CTIJF organisers added that other factors, including unavoidable delays and unforeseen challenges, also affected their planning for 2023.
The festival is now scheduled to take place on February 23-24 2024.
