Former president Thabo Mbeki is due to be officially inaugurated as the chancellor of the University of SA (Unisa) on Monday.

This followed Mbeki’s appointment in December after a unanimous vote by the Unisa council, the university said in a statement on Tuesday. Unisa said Mbeki’s appointment as chancellor was in line with the institution’s vision and mission.

Mbeki had been involved in various leadership roles in the liberation struggle and post-apartheid nation-building for almost six decades, said Prof Mandla Makhanya, Unisa’s principal and vice-chancellor.

Unisa already has a relationship with the Thabo Mbeki Foundation, which led to the hosting of the Thabo Mbeki African Leadership Institute, along with the launch of the Thabo Mbeki Presidential Library.

It also spawned a partnership with the South African Democracy Education Trust (Sadet), leading to the publishing of the Road to Democracy History Book Series.
