President Cyril Ramaphosa is rightly rattled by the insidious construction mafia (“Progress being made in combating economic crimes, Ramaphosa says”, October 12). This criminal network descends on visible sites of economic activity such as construction and demands 30%.
It would be a great breakthrough were Ramaphosa to “connect the dots” (thank you, Pravin Gordhan) and admit that it is the ANC’s free handouts to cadres that spawned this mafia.
The ANC policy of 30% of shares and contracts to be given to loyal cadres, masquerading as “BEE”, has metastasised into a general free-for-all. What else did the governing party expect?
Perhaps, even late in the day, we should accept that there is no free lunch.
