The ANC’s Eastern Cape provincial task team leaders will hold a meeting with the party’s national officials on Wednesday to brief them on the state of readiness for the provincial elective congress starting on Friday.

Provincial party spokesperson Loyiso Magqashela said the meeting was due to be held from 2pm on Wednesday and attendees would discuss “all logistical aspects” of the conference that need to be ironed out.

“We will brief them on how ready we are and we will be getting a report from the NEC [national executive committee] as well,” Magqashela said.

The conference is expected to elect a new provincial leadership for the ANC, with the battle for the influential party provincial chair position expected to be a three-horse race between premier Oscar Mabuyane, public works MEC Babalo Madikizela and deputy legislature speaker Mlibo Qoboshiyane.

The conference has been postponed a number of times, but Madikizela said there was no reason to stop the conference from sitting this time around because “we have been ready”.

The largely rural Eastern Cape province is the party’s third-largest in terms of membership behind KwaZulu-Natal and Mpumalanga.

The election outcome is expected to affect President Cyril Ramaphosa’s hopes of re-election at the ANC’s December elective congress.
