Parliament is set to resume business this week after its recess, with a number of committees expected to hit the ground running getting to grips with their portfolios.

On Tuesday, the portfolio committee on sport, arts & culture will get an overview on how the sports department conducts oversight on entities and federations under it. It will also look at policies and implementation of a white paper. The committee will receive an orientation workshop by the auditor-general.

The correctional services portfolio committee is expected to get a briefing from the judicial inspectorate for correctional services and the auditor-general.

Also on Tuesday, the portfolio committee on mineral & petroleum resources will receive training from the Wits Mining Institute.

The parliamentary legal service will brief the National Assembly’s home affairs portfolio committee on the Immigration Amendment Bill. The committee will also be briefed by home affairs minister Leon Schreiber and Border Management Authority commissioner Michael Masiapato on the 95 Libyan nationals who were arrested during a police raid at a military training camp in Mpumalanga.

The two leaders will also brief the committee on the 90 Ethiopians who were detained and “were meant to work and sell counterfeit goods”.

Schreiber is also expected to talk about the citizenship of former Miss SA contestant Chidimma Vanessa Adetshina.

Adetshina, the daughter of a Nigerian and Mozambican immigrant, was born in Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital. She withdrew from the Miss SA contest after a national furore over her citizenship. Preliminary investigations by the department of home affairs showed her mother received citizenship fraudulently.

NSFAS briefing

On Wednesday, the standing committee on public accounts, chaired by Rise Mzansi leader Songezo Zibi, will be schooled on the workings of the auditor-general’s office.

The higher education & training portfolio committee is set to receive a briefing by the National Students Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS), with an update on funding of students at universities and technical vocational education & training colleges for the 2024 academic year.

On Thursday, the auditor-general will brief the portfolio committee on international relations & co-operation on audit process and governance.

On Friday, the portfolio committee on science, technology & innovation will be briefed on the programmes, plans, finances and challenges of the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC) and the Technology Innovation Agency.

Also taking place in the National Assembly on Friday is a briefing of the portfolio committee on sport, arts & culture by the SA Cultural Observatory on the economic impact of the department’s programmes and plans for research relating to sport.

The ANC in Gauteng is set to hold the last day of the two-day provincial executive committee lekgotla on Monday. The gathering is expected to bring together representatives from the party’s regional structures and “cadres deployed in government to engage on policy programmes and priorities for the provincial government”.

“These priorities are designed to propel Gauteng forward, ensuring a more equitable, prosperous, and sustainable future for all its citizens,” said ANC Gauteng secretary Thembinkosi “TK” Nciza.

“The lekgotla will provide directives to ANC structures and government, outlining strategic measures to enhance service delivery and governance, ensuring effective implementation and improved outcomes for the people of Gauteng.”
