POLITICAL WEEK AHEAD: Patricia de Lille to appear before MPs over dismissed tourism board

Portfolio committee to bring all parties into one room to get to grips with the issues at SA Tourism

Tourism minister Patricia de Lille and members of the dissolved board of SA Tourism are set to appear before parliament’s tourism portfolio committee on Tuesday.

This is after De Lille dissolved the board with immediate effect having reportedly accused it of holding an illegal meeting on August 1. At the meeting the board placed CEO Nombulelo Guliwe on precautionary suspension for being part of a team that authorised an unlawful R4.1m prepayment to an SA Tourism supplier who failed to do the work, Business Times reported.

Ronalda Nalumango, chair of the tourism portfolio committee, said they had decided to bring all the parties into one room — from the minister to members of the now dissolved board as well as the chair of the board that preceded this one — to grasp the issues.

On Tuesday, the portfolio committee on international relations & co-operation and the Southern African Liaison Office are set to host a colloquium on readiness for the G20 summit to be held in SA later this year.

The repairs were necessitated by a deadly gas explosion in July 2023, which left one person dead and scores injured. About R194m has been set aside to revive Lilian Ngoyi Street, which suffered extensive infrastructure damage.
