Special Investigating Unit (SIU) head Andy Mothibi is on Monday expected to release the crime-fighting agency’s interim report into allegations of corruption, fraud and maladministration linked to supply chain management processes at Tembisa hospital.
Whistle-blower Babita Deokaran was assassinated in August 2021 after sounding the alarm about corruption at the hospital involving more than R850m.
At Monday’s briefing, Mothibi will be joined by health minister Aaron Motsoaledi, Gauteng premier Panyaza Lesufi and Gauteng health MEC Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko.
The SIU said the release of the interim report underscores its “commitment to transparency and accountability”. It handed over a preliminary investigation report to Lesufi in December 2022.
Based on the preliminary findings and recommendations, disciplinary action was taken against Tembisa Provincial Tertiary Hospital officials, with the Gauteng health department announcing in 2023 it had suspended six of the nine officials who were implicated in the SIU’s report.
The disciplinary action followed an agreement with the Gauteng provincial government that allowed an SIU secondment to investigate the hospital’s supply chain management.

Madlanga inquiry: SA spy chief to testify
Also on Monday, SA’s criminal intelligence boss, Lt-Gen Dumisani Khumalo, is set to testify before the Madlanga commission of inquiry into criminality, political interference and corruption in the criminal justice system.
Khumalo’s testimony comes after high-profile witnesses including KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Maj-Gen Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi and legal services division head Maj-Gen Petronella van Rooyen accused police minister Senzo Mchunu of undue intereference and ursuping national commissioner Fannie Masemola’s powers when he disbanded the province’s political killings task team. In his testimony, Mkhwanazi fingered former police minister Bheki Cele in trying to force Khumalo out of the police service.
Steenhuisen set for Gauteng municipal visits
DA leader and agriculture minister John Steenhuisen is on Monday expected to visit two municipalities in Gauteng as part of a countrywide tour to explain his party’s plan to grow the economy. Steenhuisen is set to visit the ANC-run Emfuleni local municipality and the neighbouring DA-run Midvaal. “In Emfuleni, businesses are losing money and infrastructure has collapsed while infrastructure investment flows into Midvaal,” the DA said.
DA Gauteng chair Fred Nel, Midvaal mayor Peter Teixeira, Emfuleni South constituency head Dennis Ryder and Emfuleni North constituency head Kingsol Chabalala will accompany Steenhuisen.
Cracks in the GNU
Patriotic Alliance (PA) leader Gayton McKenzie has threatened to resign as sports, arts & culture minister and pull his party out of the government of national unity (GNU) by Tuesday if PA deputy president Kenny Kunene is not reinstated as Johannesburg’s transport MMC.
Kunene resigned from the position two months ago after he was found at Katiso Molefe’s house just as the police pounced to arrest Molefe over allegations he had orchestrated the murder of Oupa Sefoka, also known as DJ Sumbody. However, an independent investigation later cleared Kunene of wrongdoing, and he was sworn in again as a city councillor on Friday.
Ekurhuleni hosts tourism indaba
The Ekurhuleni metro is set to host the Ekurhuleni Tourism Indaba on Tuesday. The indaba, according to the municipality, will provide an opportunity for tourism stakeholders to partner with the metro to advance the growth and sustainability of tourism.
“The session will see consolidation of insights, sharing ideas and exploring new opportunities to advance our destination,” the metro said.
The African Mining Week 2025 is set to take place in Cape Town from Wednesday until Friday. The conference is billed as Africa’s premier platform for mining investment and policy dialogue.
