Tell me about the work you do as a biochemical scientist.

I am a scientist, and mainly work in the laboratory and perform biomedical treatments throughout the country.

When I am not travelling, my day begins early at the office with a meeting with staff members from the production team, regulatory team and the sales team.

This would be followed by time in the laboratories with new research-and-development projects as well as the execution of products listed on the production schedule. I also take time for consultations with members of the public regarding skin concerns.

During the evenings, I head off to tertiary institutions to lecture students in biochemistry, medicinal chemistry, tissue engineering, cosmetic science and health economics.

I am far too restless to be satisfied with one achievement. I continuously conduct research in various fields.

My next major achievement is to build and obtain an accreditation on various laboratories all over Africa, where I formulate and manufacture medical devices, pharmaceutical and cosmeceutical products.

What drew you to a career in biomedicine?

From a very young age I had a great affinity towards nature and biological sciences with the particular application within the medical arena. A career in biochemistry and chemistry was a perfect fit.

What qualities make you good at what you do?

Drive: running a business can be challenging, and some challenges call for a moderate amount of competitiveness, determination, and motivation.

Confidence: confidence is a powerful character trait that can instil trust, facilitate respect and lead to increased success. I am confident in my skills.

Passion: it can be difficult to overcome the challenges of running a successful business without passion for your work. I try to incorporate things I am passionate about into the day-to-day operation of my businesses.

Focus: the ability to block out distractions and focus on the immediate issue, task or goal as well as the bigger picture is a key trait for a successful entrepreneur.

What did you want to be when you were a child?

I always wanted to be a scientist or medical practitioner. Perhaps as a child I could not properly define what I wanted to be. But now the description is simple: I wanted to be a biomedical scientist.

What makes the work you do meaningful?

I have always dreamt of becoming a brilliant scientist - discovering and developing my own product ranges. With my specialised skills in product formulation and development, I decided to start my own business and co-founded Biomedical Emporium. The discovery of new scientific solutions on skin and health problems and the relief and appreciation of patients experiencing the results are meaningful.

That moment a person looks in the mirror and someone new looks back at them is life-changing.
