Tell me about the work you do at Network Configurations, and about the company and what it does.
Netconfig is a specialist cloud and technology provider which focuses on a range of issues, including IT services and support, networking, cabling and wireless CCTV, and software development.
My role has evolved over the years from selling to licensing and the day-to-day management of staff.
Today, I run and oversee finance, human resources, guiding and mentoring staff, problem areas in the business, operational management and many other things.
How did you end up working in tech?
In 1995, I started working for an IT company. This was my first experience in the real world of computers. My passion for the world of technology was officially activated.
I started to navigate the world of hardware and software, learning licensing agreement programs, and became a Novell-certified salesperson and Novell expert on licensing.
What does your title "chief whip" mean in terms of your role at work?
Chief whip was a term of endearment given to me in the early days - my knack for whipping people, processes and day-to-day things into shape and getting people to do what needed to be done earned me the title. I have stood my ground in a historically male-dominated industry. I have navigated the muddy waters of stereotyping and made a massive impact on the day-to-day running of Network Configurations over the years.
What makes you good at your job?
Reality versus fantasy. Our world has a lot of lovely shiny new technologies, and I am good at grounding the team, being the party pooper and bringing the team back into line to focus on what customers and the business really need.
What do you find most meaningful about the work you do?
My passion for people — it has always been about my people seeing their growth, helping the team realise their ability and conquer their mountains. My staff's success means my success and my business's success. They are my biggest asset — without them I have no business.
What did you want to be when you were a child?
An explorer. I always loved the idea of life's amazing journeys to see new cultures, places, open spaces and meeting new people.
What is the best career advice you have ever received, and who gave it to you?
Do what you love and love what you do, and always make time for others, no matter how successful or busy you are. I always try to be humble and approachable, no matter what. Remember to always take responsibility for how you respond to what life throws at you.
