A new year brings the promise of change, and for some that may mean dusting off their CVs and looking for a new job.

“If you have your sights set on a big career move — or better yet — on landing your dream job in 2023, your CV has to be up to scratch,” say marketing agency Penquin human resources (HR) co-ordinator Fundi Twala and HR director Annemie Burger.

They advise:

  • If you decide to include a photo, use one that has not been touched up so you look like the person in the picture when you are interviewed. Don't use a selfie;
  • Include all the details that HR departments need: contact information; work experience; education, with relevant certificates; and skills. When listing work experience note the most recent first;
  • Make sure it is mistake-free — have a person who is good at the language proofread it, and use any online grammar and spelling tools you have access to;
  • Keep it short;
  • Be creative to stand out, but not that it is difficult to understand; and
  • Include a summary of who you are, what you are good at and what you are looking for in your next position, and your experiences and achievements — both should be short and to the point so someone can get a sense of who you are at a glance.
