A toxic workplace is devastating for employees and the organisation, causing low morale and a high turnover of staff.

“In extreme cases, it can even lead to legal action,” says executive coach Anja van Beek.

She advises:

  • If you are in a toxic workplace, find trusted colleagues who understand what you are dealing with, so you can support each other;
  • Speak out about what is happening and how your working conditions are affecting your performance. You will need to talk to your manager or, if that is not possible, someone in the human resources department;
  • While you are still with the company, continue to be a productive member and make sure you do not contribute to the toxicity; and
  • Unfortunately, often the only way to deal with a toxic environment is to leave it. If you can see that there is no way to change the organisation and it is affecting your mental health, you will need to find another job.
