Retrenchment can be devastating, but keeping up to date with the skills needed in your industry can lessen the blow.

Michael Gullan, CEO of G&G Advocacy, says employees' greatest currency is their skills rather than their previous job title, which is why we should be refining and improving our skills.

He advises the following if you are retrenched:

  • Do a personal skills audit to assess what you have learnt over the years and place your skills into three groups:
    1. Those that combine hard and soft skills — hybrid skills;
    2. Those relevant to most jobs, levels and industries — transferable skills; and
    3. Those used in particular positions — job-specific skills;
  • Look for courses that will help you update and refine the skills that need attention;
  • Look at your industry and identify where it is headed to ensure you are equipped to be part of it;
  • Ask your contacts if they know of any positions you could fill; and
  • Don't delay in getting your CV out to as many organisations as possible.
