Most workers are happy to take home the extra pay that comes with a promotion but may not be as eager to put in the hard work to make it happen.

“Getting promoted requires a combination of hard work, dedication and strategy,” says Gontse Madumo, talent acquisition lead for Sub-Saharan Africa at Mondelēz International.

“Being intentional by setting goals, mastering roles, networking for success, being proactive and engaging in continuous learning can do wonders in improving our chances and making ourselves noticeable. It may take time, but it is achievable with the right tools.”

She advises:

  • Build and maintain a network of people who can be your cheerleaders when you are not in the room;
  • Find ways to shadow leaders to learn from them;
  • Ask your manager for additional responsibilities so you can show them you are ready to take on a bigger role;
  • Find out which tasks your manager does not enjoy doing and offer to take them off their hands;
  • Take any opportunity that is offered, especially if it's a leadership role within your team, such as mentoring new staff;
  • Ask your manager for regular feedback, and use what they say to do your job better; and
  • Improve yourself through continuous learning with the help of reading and/or short courses.
