What are your most important tasks as CEO?
My foremost responsibilities revolve around leadership and mentorship, nurturing a team culture where each member is empowered to excel and lead within their respective domains. Additionally, I maintain a vigilant focus on the financial health of the company, ensuring that expenses remain within sustainable limits and that we consistently achieve a healthy net profit. While revenue growth is important, I prioritise profitability, recognising that sustainable success is grounded in sound financial management. Moreover, I strategise to expand our market presence, seeking opportunities to increase our market share and foster long-term brand growth.
How did you end up doing the work you do?
In 2013, I established Pulse Dermatology and Laser after returning to South Africa after seven years of immersive training and professional experience in London, where I collaborated closely with dermatologists and plastic surgeons, catering to a high-profile clientele. Witnessing the transformative impact of aesthetic treatments on my patients fuelled my determination to acquire a laser machine and bring my expertise back to Cape Town.
What do you think makes you good at what you do?
What sets me apart is my passion and commitment. I approach each day with enthusiasm and a clear vision of what I aim to achieve. My determination to turn vision into reality fuels my drive and optimism, while my genuine interest in people enhances my ability to lead and connect.
What do you look for when recruiting new people?
I prioritise several key attributes. First, I seek individuals who demonstrate a genuine passion for their work, as this enthusiasm often translates into exceptional performance. Additionally, I value organisational skills and integrity, as these qualities contribute to a productive and trustworthy work environment. I also look for candidates who exhibit a strong drive for success and a hunger to achieve their goals, coupled with a commitment to personal and professional growth. Lastly, kindness and a dedication to career advancement are qualities I look for.
What is the best career advice you have ever received?
One of the most valuable pieces of career advice I’ve received is to cultivate a work ethic that leaves a positive impact in my absence. This entails bringing a constructive energy to the workplace, taking pride in my responsibilities, and offering assistance to my team whenever feasible. Additionally, I’ve found great success in prioritising tasks by focusing on the three most critical items on my agenda. By addressing these priorities first, I ensure that even if unforeseen challenges arise throughout the day, I’ve made significant progress towards advancing my projects.
What advice do you have for young people at the start of their careers?
Do your time in the trenches. Hone your craft. So many people want to have instant success, but there is no such thing. It takes years to learn and grow in your field. Building a strong foundation will help you grow and learn, and will set you up for future success.
