Despite the fear it produces in many people, artificial intelligence (AI) has a lot to offer organisations and can enhance human potential enormously, says Lyndy van den Barselaar, MD at ManpowerGroup South Africa.
“AI might be able to crunch numbers and analyse data faster than you can say 'algorithm', but it lacks the depth, creativity and human touch people offer. AI isn't about replacing humans with machines; it's about unlocking the full potential of people by leveraging the power of technology. It's not about beating the machines — it's about leveraging their power to become the best version of yourself,” she says.
She advises:
- AI can process data, identify patterns and complete tasks fast and efficiently, but this does not make humans become irrelevant as we have the amazing ability to adapt to the new normal, embrace the technological advancements and collaborate with rather than compete with AI;
- As impressive as AI is, it cannot replace the specialised knowledge that people can possess. There are many tasks that require a high degree of precision, expertise, judgment and creativity that are best left to humans;
- Whatever you might do, find ways to use AI tools to your advantage, combining your unique abilities with AI's super-skills;
- You need to work on your attitude. The huge advances in technology are daunting and overwhelming, but they are also here to stay. Recognise the transition as the beginning of a new way of working and commit to learning all you can to keep up and not be left behind
