Electronic sports, or esports, encompass competitive video gaming and are about much more than a group of teenagers playing computer games; they can also provide useful workplace skills.

“Esports have evolved well beyond the stereotype of kids playing games in their bedrooms. Today, it represents a thriving industry with diverse career opportunities, ranging from professional players and coaches to roles in event management, marketing and game development,” says Barry Louzada, MD of Mettlestate, the esports and gaming partner.

He advises:

  • Gaming and esports can teach and develop teamwork, communication and leadership skills through collaborative gameplay and strategic decision-making;
  • The high-pressure nature of gaming teaches players how to solve problems and adapt when they face setbacks;
  • Esports require good time management and discipline, both of which are needed at work; and
  • Gamers have to learn how to prioritise tasks while under pressure.
