It is not easy to balance your work and home responsibilities with the added stress of studying, but a few tweaks can make all the difference.

"Successfully balancing work, life and advanced education is a challenging yet rewarding journey. By setting clear goals, managing time effectively and leveraging support systems, mature students can achieve their educational aspirations without sacrificing their professional or personal lives," says Naseem Kathrada, Regent Business School director of human capital.

He advises:

  • Be clear about why you are studying — whether to advance your career or to change industry — as this knowledge will keep you grounded and focused;
  • You cannot expect to cope with the added tasks without excellent time management; though it may be hard at first, consistency will make it easier. Use time-blocking to dedicate certain times for work, study and leisure, and stick to it;
  • Be clear to everyone in your life — at the office and at home — about your plans, so you get their support and understanding;
  • Online courses are often much easier to fit into your already tight schedule due to their inherent flexibility; and
  • Take care of yourself through regular breaks and delegating the tasks you can. And, ask for help before things get out of control.
