Rather than trying to avoid mistakes at work, take ownership and use them to learn important lessons.

"What I’ve learnt over the years is that sometimes an attempt at great work can start off looking and feeling like a mishap or a step in the wrong direction, but it’s how you reroute and get back on track that allows for the real magic to come to life," says Rogan Jansen, co-founder and creative director at design studio DashDigital.

He advises:

Start by acknowledging you have messed up; this shows your’re willing to own your mistake and can now analyse why it happened and how to fix it;

Be patient with yourself — it can take time to take responsibilit; y

If you are a leader, it’s crucial to set a good example so your team knows it is safe to fail and mistakes are viewed as opportunities to learn;

Studies have found that when companies embrace mistakes, fewer of them occur; and

The more you view mistakes as lessons the better you become at the process; this will lead to a growth mindset.
