South Africa is in desperate need of more teachers, as every year more retire than join the profession. But this offers an opportunity to young people.
"This means that teaching is currently an in-demand career in South Africa, offering a range of opportunities and job stability in fast-changing and uncertain times," says Charlene Wessels, an educational psychologist and educator at the South African College of Applied Psychology.
She advises:
- You can qualify as a teacher with a four-year bachelor of education (BEd) or a bachelor’s degree plus a one-year postgraduate certificate in education (PGCE);
- Beyond what they need to study, teachers need excellent communication skills, especially when it comes to persuading and motivating others;
- They need to be able to explain things to learners who may have different learning styles; and
- They also need to be able to develop and maintain trusting relationships to encourage learning among their pupils.
