Ineffective managers are the reason many people resign, and ill-equipped managers sometimes quit as they feel overwhelmed. This is why companies need to ensure new leaders are prepared for their roles.

"The last thing you need is to promote a star performer into a leadership role only to have them or their team resign. Or worse, lose customers due to the failings and inexperience of the new leader," says Michael Gullan, CEO of G&G Advocacy. He advises:

Leaders who lack experience lose credibility with their teams, so training needs to focus on closing skills gaps to boost leaders’ confidence;

When employees are promoted to management roles they often lack the skills they need to manage a team, so organisations need to offer the necessary support, such as mentorship programmes;

The different generations that work together can clash on various issues, so new managers need to have the necessary soft skills, including conflict management; and

Leaders should be able to help their team members develop a sense of purpose about the work they do.
