Career goals are important and can ensure you do not get stuck — but make sure they set you up for success, not failure.
"Before pushing play on your goal-setting journey, it’s crucial that you take a few steps back and consider how deeply connected these goals are to your mental health, physical health and overall life goals," says Caroline Kilbey, head of talent acquisition at Strider Digital. She advises:
Consider where you want to be in five, 10 or even 20 years’ time, and work out what you need to do to get there;
You need a clear head when setting goals, so do so when you are in a good space mentally, to ensure they are aligned with your values;
You also need to be physically well when setting goals or you will not have the strength to stay focused and committed to make the necessary changes;
Ensure your career goals are in sync with your broader life goals; and
Accept that things are unlikely to go to plan, so adopt a flexible approach.
