Tell me about your job as head of technology maintenance and support services at Air Traffic & Navigation Services (ATNS).

My job entails strategic and operational leadership to ensure there are high levels of technical support on national, regional and international levels, and that operational requirements are met to ensure that air traffic management services are delivered in the most efficient, effective and professional manner. The scope covers the support and maintenance of surveillance, navigation and communication infrastructure as well as display systems.

What do you think makes you good at your job?

I am committed, systematic, confident and goal-orientated. I have a good understanding of my strengths, weaknesses, experiences and emotions. I also possess more than 20 years of experience in hi-tech electronic environments with an in-depth knowledge and understanding of aeronautical communication, navigation, surveillance systems and avionics systems.

What are the biggest challenges you face at work?

The age and obsolescence of some of the aviation technologies currently in use. The need to regularly upgrade aviation systems and provide backup power systems to prevent technical issues and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements poses a challenge for the safety and efficiency of air traffic control services. I would prefer to outsource activities involving continuous assessment of supplier performance and process turnaround times.

What did you want to be when you were a child?

My first career interest as a child was to become a doctor. As a teenager, I developed a keen interest in various engineering disciplines such as biomedical, electrical, aerospace, civil, mechanical and software. With proper career guidance at university, I settled on computer engineering.

What qualities do you look for when recruiting for your team?

The technical qualities required involve the ability to diagnose faults and take corrective action to restore air traffic management systems and equipment to acceptable operating conditions, which requires in-depth training and guidance. Fortunately, ATNS is the primary provider of training services for air traffic safety electronic personnel through its Aviation Training Academy.

What advice do you have for young people at the start of their careers?

They should seek out career counselling or guidance from professionals and be open-minded about different career paths. Proper career guidance can be a crucial factor in navigating their professional journey and help them to understand current and future job market trends and growth areas. I encourage young people to build connections with professionals in their desired field and find mentors who can provide guidance and support.
