How to … Build excellent teams

A team that works is never the result of luck but intention

Some teams just have it — that sense of rhythm, quiet confidence and unspoken alignment — but it’s never luck; it’s always built with intention, says Raymond Langa, group CEO of Leagas Delaney South Africa. Picture:123RF/KONSTANTIN PELIKH

A good team makes all the difference at work and is the product of careful thought and planning.

“I’ve seen the difference between a team that clicks and one that quietly fractures under pressure. And I’ve learnt, sometimes the hard way, that when the stakes are high, the team you build is often the difference between success and setback,” says Raymond Langa, group CEO of Leagas Delaney South Africa.

“Some teams just have it. That sense of rhythm. That quiet confidence. That unspoken alignment. But it’s never luck. It’s always built with intention.”

He advises:

  • Ensure there is a clear, shared goal, so everyone pulls in the same direction;
  • Trust is crucial but it takes time and it has to be earned;
  • Honesty from everyone about everything keeps members committed and the team strong;
  • Keep blame out of discussions when things don't work, but demand responsibility and accountability;
  • Shared values and mutual respect ensures that team members keep working hard with purpose even when things get difficult; and
  • When all these are present, the results will be a reflection of how well your team works together.
