Many people pick a career when they are young and stick to it until retirement — but others feel the need to make a drastic change, which comes with challenges and rewards.
“In the past, people would mostly stick to a relatively predictable path throughout their careers — moving steadily up the ladder in their chosen field, or branching out into proximate roles.,” says Advaita Naidoo, Africa MD at executive search firm Jack Hammer.
“In the last few years, however, this model has been turned on its head for a variety of reasons.”
She advises:
- Consider taking a bridging role that allows you to transition into your new industry or role and build your expertise gradually;
- Don't let other people decide your worth; argue for your strengths and explain how your experience will add value to your new role;
- Smaller organisations are often more flexible and will allow you to wear multiple hats as you move to a new role; and
- Reach out to former colleagues and clients who already know how skilled and hard-working you are.
