Many graduates leave university ready to enter the world of work, but are unsure how to go about looking for a job.

“Not everyone walks into a job straight after graduation, and that’s OK. New roles become available all year round,” says Hoosen Essof, chief innovation & student experience officer at Regent Business School.

“Keep sharpening your CV, building your network, and staying active on professional platforms like LinkedIn. Career success is a journey, and it starts when you start showing up for it.”

He advises:

  • Don't wait to complete your studies before applying for work, as many employers advertise roles months in advance;
  • Learn how your industry works — for example, finance and tech recruitment usually begins early (between July and September of your final year), while marketing and retail opportunities are often advertised only weeks before the job begins;
  • Previous work, internships or volunteering can help enormously;
  • Use all the facilities your institution offers, including career centres, mentorship opportunities or job placements; and
  • Don't worry if you feel out of your depth, confidence takes time.
